Giving and Getting Help During the Coming Holidays

During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays we become more attentive to the needs of others and seek to help them out. In these days of pandemic even the act of being charitable has had to endure some modifications. I want to pass along to you the following ways in which you can help others or get help or a meal for yourself during these days:

Thanksgiving and Christmas Meals:

The Needham Community Council is prepared to help those who may be in need of food or may simply desire a holiday meal without preparing too much food. For Thanksgiving they will have a food box with ingredients to prepare a meal along with a gift card to the supermarket to buy a turkey. These boxes can be picked up or they will be dropped off. For those who desire a prepared meal, one will be prepared at a local restaurant and then dropped off, with reheating instructions, by the Rotary Club the day before Thanksgiving. This is not a financial need-based meal but is for anyone who may be alone or with one other person on Thanksgiving and may be unable to prepare a meal themselves. The NCC asks that requests for these be in by November 16th. Their phone number is (781) 444-2415 or you can make the request through their website at http://needhamcommunitycouncil.org. At Christmas time there will also be a meal delivery, again prepared by a local restaurant and delivered by Temple Beth Shalom.

During the current pandemic, those who are in need of food from the Food Pantry do not have to be referred or meet the usual income eligibility requirements. They must simply be a resident of Needham. Arrangements for contactless pick up or delivery of food items can be done by calling 781-444-2415.

Food Donations

The Needham Community Council is not currently accepting personal donations of food. They are accepting, however, food donations that are ordered through, and delivered by, food vendors such as Amazon, Walmart or the like.  At the Food Pantry’s website, you can access a link to Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1HHJCRKP7KDOT/ref=cm_go_nav_hz?pldnSite=1) where you will find their wish list of things of which they are most in need. There is also a link to donate produce (http://needhamcommunitycouncil.org/food-pantry/food-wish-list/). As you might expect, cash donations are also appreciated.

Gifts for Those in Need

St. Bartholomew’s usually has a giving tree to benefit Catholic Charities in Brockton. Catholic Charities will not be making use of a giving tree this year. Instead, Catholic Charities will graciously accept gift cards. More information should be coming forward in the bulletin.

Likewise, the Needham Community Council will be moving, as well, from gifts to gift cards for those in need. They plan to provide the following:  (1) for children aged 10 and under, a $50 gift card to Learning Express and a $50 gift card to Michelson’s Shoes, both here in Needham, (2) for children ages 10 to 18, a $50 gift card to TJ Maxx and a $50 gift card to Michelson’s, and (3) those aged 19 and above the choice of a gift card to TJ Maxx or CVS. You can help by either making a monetary gift to the NCC or giving to the NCC a gift card to one of these stores in $50 denominations. At Learning Express and Michelson’s a “holiday heart” can be purchased to support this program or you can donate on the Community Council’s website.
