With Gratitude - Charlie Kanelos

Dear friends and parishioners of St. Barts, I write to you with mixed emotions and some degree of   sadness. Last  September I made the decision that in May of this year I would retire from my music ministry; since the age of 15, it’s been a wild and fulfilling ride for the last 50 years. I’ve decided that as I enter into this new chapter in my life with  family and grandchildren, that there is a time and place for everything. I have been so proud to be a part of St. Bart’s Church for the last 11 years as adult choir director/ organist/vocalist. I want to thank Fr. Derek for his spiritual leadership and for all he has done for this parish; I wish him well in his new assignment. Thanks to Antonia Nedder, Music Director for all of her support throughout the years, to Jen Foster, Director of Religious Education for many behind the scenes support, to ALL members of the adult choir, cantors and instrumentalists and to ALL parishioners and friends of St. Barts; I will hold each and everyone of you in my mind and heart always. Most of all I want to thank my wife, Joanne and my children for their monumental love and extraordinary support of my music ministry throughout the years!

My last day before official retirement will be Sunday, May 23rd; I will play for the 8 and 9:45am masses. Sending air hugs and fist bumps to all and hope to see many of you between now and the 23rd.

I have always believed that as a liturgical musician, our role is to accompany the action of the liturgy through our  music and to assist the congregation in singing the Lord’s praises. The hope has always been to elevate prayer and worship to deeper levels, transcending into a spiritual communion with God.

St. Augustine says… “Those who sing, pray twice. ... We sing because singing is what the people of God do in God's presence. Song is the gift God has given us to unite our heads and our hearts in praise.”

Thank you and God Bless All of You!
