Altar Servers

The Liturgy is a public act of worship that the Church gives to God.The ministry of the Altar Server is to assist the priest on the altar while growing closer to God in one’s own life. Through service on the altar, servers also help the congregation to better understand the Mass, and together they make their love of God stronger.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participate in initial and on-going training as scheduled
  • Be available when scheduled (approximately twice per month) or find a replacement from the provided Altar Server list
  • Be able to work together on a team
  • Arrive in the Sacristy 15 minutes before the Mass is scheduled to begin preparations
  • Dress appropriately
  • Understand the liturgical structure of the Mass you will be serving

Altar Servers:

  • Have a strong desire to serve at the altar of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ
  • Have a deep sense of the spirit of the liturgy and be trained to perform the required functions in a correct and orderly manner
  • Be an active member of the parish community and be a person of faith committed to the Catholic Church
  • Be in the 4th grade or older (boy or girl) and have already received the Sacraments of First Communion and Reconciliation
  • Anticipate what may happen next by paying attention to the priest throughout Mass
  • Be physically capable of assisting on the altar
  • Altar Servers are needed at all Masses. Servers should make themselves available, whenever possible, if additional coverage is needed, and the server is present, but not scheduled for that Mass
