TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMES
“Ordinary Times” Do we ever appreciate or even notice the beauty of ordinary times? Or are we bored, dissatisfied, and constantly looking for something else? Does our culture teach us that unless we are in successful pursuit of something greater, we are not fulfilled?
Ordinary times are a gift from God. Ordinary times give us breathing room to stop, look, and listen to each other and to be in touch with everything else in His creation. Just look around at the world we live in. We are not constantly living in fear of possible natural disasters; living in fear because of a war torn nation surrounding us; living in fear of no food available/starvation; living in isolation with no hope of anyone available to help us? The list could go on. Our ordinary times are good. No, our ordinary times are great.
Our ordinary (“the regular or customary condition or course of things” Webster) times provide a person with many precious gifts. There is the gift of being quiet when we want to be. We can watch the sun rise or set, if we wish. We can talk to God without interruption. We can watch those around us without saying a word and just marvel at the miracle of love and life. We can go about our business, whatever it is, without others dictating to us what we must do and when. We can do something or nothing depending on how we feel. We can go to church, or not, as we decide. In this country we are blessed in our ordinary times. If we are not healthy, there are medical resources available. If we seek to grow deeper in our understanding of God in our lives, we have all kinds of resources to draw upon. In our ordinary times we are blessed with the gift of choice. How we live and use our time can be so ordinary that we fail to recognize its power. God gave us these times. Maybe, we should reflect on just how our faith is experienced in these ordinary times. And maybe, we will come to know that these ordinary times, no matter how each of us describes our own, are truly extraordinary. Just because things are ordinary, they should never be wasted or lacking in appreciation. Ordinary is great. Thanking God for the experience of the peaceful ordinary is mandatory as it is a great blessing. Never boring. And the ordinary times that most of us know are the kind that too few in this world have available to them. For them we pray, in these ordinary times.
