Stewardship: A Way of Life

 Sharing: Time Talent Treasure

“THEY SURE WERE A GREAT DISTRACTION..”

A local newspaper reporter recently wrote an article about how the Celtics and Bruins sure gave us some great viewing moments in their quest for their respective sports titles. And in the process they provided us with times of welcomed distraction from all the negative things going on in our own back yards, as well as the on the world scene. One wonders, if you are not into being a sports fan in Boston, how you achieve the same level of enjoyment and escapism, if only for a few hours a night for a few weeks.

But those bits of excitement are over and it is back to the real world. The newspapers are once again enumerating the number of services that will be cut and listing the agencies that will close all for the necessity of the balanced budget. It is hard to argue against this necessity—a balanced budget—but the effect on our neighbors will be staggering. The elderly, the poor, children at risk, children with severe health issues, the mentally challenged, the uneducated, food pantries, housing losses, job losses, etc. the list seems endless. How do we prevent families from sleeping in cars, when they see no alternative?

Sports, hobbies, reading, whatever your distraction, we cannot take a vacation, however brief, from God and His message. John 17:22 “This is the prayer of Jesus: that His believers may become one as He is one with the Father, alleluia.” We are all His whether we sit next to each other in church or not. Please tune in, and not out. We must open our eyes and ears and come to know what is happening around us. If we discover an issue that is not acceptable for one of God’s children (and we are all His children), then we must help each other and do something. If we personally cannot do something at the moment of need, then perhaps we can find someone else or a local agency who can help. If, as today’s readings say, we are to become one with each other as Jesus is one with His Father, then we cannot live in the world of distraction and escapism, however joyful. Continue to pray for each other; take a neighbor who can’t drive to church; bring some food to the pantry; help us help others through our church activities; please do something!

There go I, but for the grace of God.
